Late preterm infants—those born between 34 and 36 weeks gestation—often appear well at discharge but are at increased risk for complications that may lead to emergency department visits. This course prepares emergency providers to recognize and manage the unique challenges of this vulnerable population. Learners will review how to identify late preterm infants and the common conditions they may present with, such as hyperbilirubinemia, hypoglycemia, and feeding difficulties. The course includes instruction on the use of PediTools for bilirubin assessment and offers evidence-based guidance on developing treatment and management plans. Special attention is given to distinguishing emergent issues from those that can be safely managed with outpatient follow-up, equipping providers to deliver timely and effective care.
1. Differentiate patients who are late preterm infants and identify common complications of this population.
2. Using PediTools, assess your patient’s level of hyperbilirubinemia and develop a treatment plan.
3. Develop a management plan for an acutely hypoglycemic late preterm infant.
4. Distinguish between non-emergent and emergent feeding difficulties of the late preterm infant.
