This course provides a comprehensive overview of Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), with a focus on its relevance in emergency medicine. Participants will review the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and its role in cardiovascular regulation, then delve into the pathophysiology of POTS and how ANS dysfunction contributes to its hallmark symptoms. The session will highlight common clinical presentations and offer practical guidance on differentiating POTS from other conditions with overlapping symptoms in the emergency setting. Various management strategies will be discussed, along with the critical importance of provider awareness and sensitivity training to ensure patients with POTS receive appropriate and empathetic care. This course is designed to enhance diagnostic confidence, improve patient outcomes, and reduce misdiagnosis or dismissal of symptoms as anxiety or malingering.
  1. Identify the key components of the autonomic nervous system and describe its role in regulating cardiovascular function.
  2. Explain the pathophysiology of POTS, including how dysregulation of the ANS leads to the typical presentation of symptoms.
  3. Recognize the common clinical signs and symptoms of POTS during an emergency room evaluation and differentiate it from other conditions with similar presentations.
  4. Assess the effectiveness of various symptom management strategies.
  5. Critically evaluate the importance of sensitivity training in emergency care for patients with POTS to ensure that their symptoms are taken seriously and not dismissed as anxiety or malingering.
