In the past two years, the American College of Cardiology released major policy updates on the evaluation of chest pain. It's important that clinicians understand these new changes on this potentially emergent presentation of disease, know up-to-date methods of diagnosing and ruling out cardiac chest pain, and minimize over testing.
  1. Understand the significance of the ACC's 2021 "Guideline for the Evaluation and Diagnosis of Chest Pain" and 2022 "Expert Consensus Decision Pathway on the Evaluation and Disposition of Acute Chest Pain in the Emergency Department."
  2. Appreciate typical presentations of acute cardiac chest pain and how presentations may vary based on gender and age.
  3. Risk-stratify potential cardiac chest pain utilizing serial high-sensitivity troponin testing and evidence-based clinical pathways.
  4. Recognize new EKG patterns beyond STEMI criteria that are suggestive of coronary ischemia and infarction.
